An Unusual Winter in the North
Spring 2025 gave us one of the more unusual snowpacks we’ve seen in North Iceland — with less snowfall than in any year since 1963, according to some of our senior neighbors. The season brought unpredictable layers, shifting weather patterns, and a constant need for flexibility. But despite the challenges, it turned out to be a spring full of incredible skiing, unforgettable experiences, and smiling guests — both in the backcountry and from the heli.
Experience You Can’t Download
At Summit Heliskiing, we’ve always believed in the power of local knowledge — and this season reminded us just how essential it is. Our all-Icelandic guide team didn’t just adapt to the conditions — they excelled. With years of experience skiing and guiding these same mountains, they brought an intimate understanding of the terrain, snow behavior, and microclimates that no forecast could replicate.
The Backcountry Season Set the Tone
Long before the helis took off, our guides were out in the mountains — leading backcountry touring groups through valleys, ridgelines, and secret stashes. That early-season knowledge became a critical asset. It allowed us to track the snowpack in real time, spot where the snow was holding, and anticipate how each zone might respond to changing weather. When the heliskiing season began, that information gave us a clear advantage.
Good Decisions Make Great Skiing
When snow is scarce or conditions are unstable, decision-making becomes everything. Where to fly. When to hold back. Which aspects are shaded and cold. Which bowls are catching too much wind. These aren’t questions answered by maps or models — they’re solved by intuition, terrain memory, and accumulated experience.
Safe Lines, Big Smiles, Real Adventure
Thanks to this deep local knowledge, our guests enjoyed safe, high-quality skiing every single day — whether from the heli or on touring skis. They left with not just good turns, but with real stories, big grins, and that unmistakable sense of having been part of a true adventure.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As always, we offer fully guided and assisted guiding for both heliskiing and backcountry touring. If you’re planning ahead, now’s the time — bookings for 2026 are open, and we’re excited to welcome new and returning guests to experience the magic (and challenge!) of skiing in North Iceland.
Thank you 2025 – and welcome 2026!
